- Course objectives
- An overview of the roman art for students of the classical archaeology or other disciplines at the beginning of their studies
- Syllabus
- 1. Characteristics of roman imperial art, roman synthesis, chronology. 2. The influences of the hellenistic styles and classicism, roman eclecticism as a creative source of further developement. Roman architecture and its originality. 4. Augustan art as a formative period for the roman synthesis and visual representation. 5. Julio-claudian period, portraits, narrative reliefs. 6. Styles and themes of the wall painting. 7. Flavian art and architecture. 8. Trajan's era and achievement of the roman synthesis - the column of Trajan and its impact. 9. Classicism of Hadrian's period - following romantic Greek aesthetics, concept of the villa in Tivoli. 10. Art of the Antonines. 11. Expressionism and increasing abstraction of the Severan art. 13. Conclusion.
