Course objectives
The students will learn the Baroque culture (literature and music in particular) - will understand the specific development in Czech literature in relation to historical events (the transformation of the function of literature, narrowing of spectrum of genres) and in relation to Baroque aesthetic theories - will understand the preaching as a specific genre - will learn the most significant Czech preachers - will learn to read the texts written in blackletter
Syllabus
  • The concept of Baroque, Baroque literature and its specific concept in Czech territory (historic events). Jesuits´ contribution. The periodization proposals of this period (Černý). Baroque aesthetics and affect theory: the influence on various fine arts (music, literature, plastic arts and architecture). The transformation of the function of literature after the year 1620: lesser variety in genres. Individual genres: hymnography and homiletics as key genres (further drama, legends, religious didactic production). Specifics of these genres: hymnography – musical and textual components; homiletics – function, structure, artistic elements, types of preachings, theoretical background. Individual preachers (Šteyer, Nitsch, Bilovský) and interpreations of their texts. Baroque as a source of inspiration.
