Course objectives
This course provides a detailed discussion and application of Czechoslovak cinema before 1945 in its socio-cultural contexts with an emphasis on advocacy of an idea that film is a medium with cultural function. We will point out initial debate about entertainment (commercial) and culturally-educational features of cinema and we will focus on ways in which the idea of cinemas` cultural function fulfiled on the level of production and how was it interpreted and shaped by film censorship.
