Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and explain the nature, activity and specifics of the French political system in the age of Napoleon. Students of this course will be led to gain insight into the personality of Napoleon I, his visions, political perspectives and the framework of his government.
Syllabus
  • Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
  • 1. From the French Republic to the First French Empire: Napoleon Bonaparte and his ascent to the French throne.
  • 2. Constitutional, administrative and juridical system of Napoleonic France: agencies of government in the age of Consulate and Empire in the shadow of Napoleonic supremacy, hierarchy of power and control.
  • 3. Expansionary and foreign policy of Napoleonic France: its political visions and their significant impact on European society. Formation of new administrative map of Europe (1799–1815).
