“Identities” is one of the big topics of the cultural and sociological sciences in present. Also the term “celtic” is popular for more then twenty years in archaeology but also in public view. The concept „Celts“ be subject to a permanent change in meaning since the antiquity. If at first all peoples north of the Alps were termed as celti, then Caesar separated the germani from the celti by the Rhine (de Bello gallico).„ This confusion of concepts was intensified by the introduction if „Celtic languages“ by the linguistics in the 18th century. Ethnic groups were often equated with language groups. Because of this resulted a strong relationship of the term „celts“ to the British islands, which archeologically only conditionally could be hold. Also Ceasar named the inhabitants of the Islands britanni and not celti. Outgoing of this, the nationalism of Irland, Wales and Scotland developed among others through the socalled “Celtic Renaissance” or “Celtic Revival” (Yeats, Synge, Joyce,…). Also today these nations or areas built a strong part of their identity and the recent tourism of this topics. Nowadays even esoteric circles refer to this concept. In this seminar the different appearances and definitions of the concept „Celts“ shall be explained and analyzed critically.
