- Course objectives
- In the end of this course the student will have a basic overview of the history of Visigoths and Persians and about their interactions with the roman empire; the student will be able to orientate himself in the contemporary sources - written and material - and will have the ability to analize them and make his/her own conclusions based on them.
- Syllabus
- Persians:
- 1. Introduction, literature and sources
- 2. The collapse of the Seleucid Empire, the creation Parthia, the first expansion of Arsacids
- 3. Parthian military, society, foreign trade and policy
- 4. The first contacts with Rome, Mithridates II, Orodes II., Battle of Carrhae
- 5. Roman - Parthian relations during the Second Triumvirate and the reign of Emperor Augustus
- 6. Queen Musa, the decline of Parthia, Vologases I, campaign of Traianus and Lucius Verus , Vologases IV.
- 7. Septimius Severus, the disintegration of Parthia, the battle for Nisibis, Ardeshir and uprise of the Sassanid Empire
- 8. Shapur I. The Great , the transformation of the Persian Visigoths:
- 1. the origin of the Goths, their wandering through Europe
- 2. contacts with the Roman empire, christianization
- 3. the kingdom of Toulouse
- 4. the arian visigothic kingdom
- 5. the crucial era – the reign of Leovigild and Reccared
- 6. the catholic visigothic kingdom
- 7. the end of the visigothic empire, invasion of the Arabs

- The classes will take the form of lectures complemented by illustrations and work with written sources.
- Assessment methods
- The students will obtain the colloquium for active participation on the lectures and elaboration of a written paper on one of the topics, which will be posted to the study materials, within the range of 15 000 signs.
