Course objectives
After completing the course students will be acquainted with the questions of folk glass underpainting from the ethnological point of view. They will be able to identify this phenomenon historically, geographically, socially, iconographically and in terms of development, they will be able to evaluate its role in the rural environment.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the topic of folk glass underpaintings, an overview of research, sources and literature so far. Ethnological study of visual arts manifestations of the popular masses. Painting on glass as a manifestation of visual arts and its place in folk culture. Producers and distributors. Iconography. Stages of development of folk painting on glass. Hand-crafted production. The beginnings of folk painting on glass in our environment. Main centres in central European territory. The present. North Bohemia, the Orlické Mountains, Bavaria, Austria, West and Southern Bohemia. Moravia, Slovakia, Poland, Romania.
