Course objectives
The course will give the student a working knowledge of the classical Babylonian language and writing of the second millennium BC, and a first insight in the culture and history of ancient Mesopotamia.

Teaching methods
Lessons of two hours each will take place daily during a period of two weeks. Since each lesson adds an essential element to the knowledge of the language, attendance of all classes is mandatory. Each lesson will be accompanied by exercises, which will be discussed in class, and require about two hours of preparation daily.
Assessment methods
Examination will take the form of a written test in which the student translates and analyzes a paragraph from the Law Book of Hammurabi; the examination will take place at an as yet undetermined moment in the month or months after the course.
