Course objectives
The course chronologically explores the character of complex and sometimes opposing literary processes. The focus is on the characteristic features of various literary streams and movements of Ukrainian modern literature, e.g. the generation of the authors of the 1960s, historical prose, literature of Ukrainian emigration and also the poetics of the contemporary post-modern literature. Peculiarities in the development of various literary genres (poetry, prose and drama) are also closely examined.

  • 2. V. Vynnyčenko and his prose.
  • 3. Post-revolutionary Ukrainian drama – e.g. I. Kočerha and O. Kornijčuk.
  • 4. The generation of the authors of the 1960s. The rejection of the normative aesthetics, the manifestations of intellectual freedom – e.g. O. Dovženko.
  • 5. The rebirth of poetics in the poetry of the authors of the 1960s - e.g. I. Drač, V. Korotyč, V. Symonenko, M. Vinhranovskyj, L. Kostenko.
  • 6. Innovative tendencies in 1960’s – e.g. J. Hucalo, V. Drozd, H. Tjutjunyk, V. Ševčuk, J. Ščerbak.
  • 7. Romantic-lyrical prose of O. Hončar and M. Stelmach
  • 8. Literature of Ukrainian Emigration of 20th century. The diasporas, leading figures and works.
  • 9. The Prague School and its leading figures – e.g. O. Oles, L. Mosendz, O. Olžyč, O. Teliha, J. Darahan, etc.
  • 10. The symbolist poetry and prose of V. Barka.
  • 11. The change of the aesthetic paradigm in the 1980’s and 1990’s literature. Ukrainian post-modernism: “Bu-Ba-Bu” – e.g. J. Andruchovyč, V. Neborak, O. Irvanec
  • 12. The ironic novel phantasmagorias of J. Andruchovyč
