- Course objectives
- This course is designed for students of Classical Greek, to whom it provides practical possibility to work with coherent Latin texts. Students will confirm their previously acquired knowledge of basic Latin grammar. The students will further develop their grammatical skills and especially their translating skills on selected examples of original Latin texts.
- Syllabus
- An introduction to individual work with original Latin texts: reading and analysis of selected Latin sources pertaining to the history of religion, cult and everyday life. Reading practice includes grammatical as well as cultural and historical commentary on the texts:
- Reading and translating examples of Classical Latin (Cicero, Caesar, Livy, Ovid)
- Reading and translating examples of Late Latin (Pliny the Younger, Apuleius)
- Christian Latin (Bible)
- Reading and translating examples of Medieval Latin (Gesta Romanorum)
- Examples of Neolatin (Jan Amos Comenius, Tadeáš Hájek of Hájek)

- Teaching methods
- One 1,5 hour seminar per week; preparing a short presentation on a chosen topic pertaining to the history of religion for class discussion.
- Assessment methods
- Active class attendance (75%) and continuous preparation of translation assignments; preparing a short presentation for class discussion. Course grade is determined by performance in the final written exam where students' knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary is tested by a translation of a short coherent Latin text (dictionary allowed).
