Course objectives
Subject provides the survey of Serbian literary production within the period of national revival and the establishment of modern Serbian state interprets Serbian literature of the period of Romanticism and Realism, in details is devoted in the commencement of Serbian Modernism, paying the attention to individual work in seminars with appropriate texts in the same moment. Especially Vuk Karadžič period of Serbian cultural advancement is emphasized as well as the period of Serbian Romanticism (Branko Radićević, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, Laza Kostić, Djura Jakšić). Also reflection of the first Serbian Modernism is taken into account (Milan Rakić, Jovan Dučić, Sima Pandurović and Vladimir Petković Dis). Prosaic focusing would involve especially the work of satiric and humorist Stevan Sremac, Bosnian Serbians Petar Kočić and Borislav Stanković, being followed in dramatic plane competently by the most expressive Yugoslavian dramatic and comedy writer Branislav Nušić. At the end of this course the student would be capable to interpret the complicated way of Serbian literature towards the European one. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of Serbian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • Disputes on orthography, characteristics of particular tendencies. Vuk Karadžić, Dj. Danićić.
  • Serbian Romanticism, establishment of the Matica srpska Society, first periodical newspapers. Cult of folk epics and publishing of its collections. Sima Milutinović Sarajlija. Njegoš.
  • Poets of the Early Romanticism: Jovan Hadžić, Ljubomir Nenadović.J. Nović Otočanin, J. Sundečić, J. Ilić. Serbian Young Romantics, both characteristics of the era and cultural development.
  • Branko Radičević, Zmaj, Dj. Jakšić, Laza Kostić.
  • Origins of Serbian novel. Cultural and political events in Serbia and Vojvodina, periodical newspapers, origins of scientific literary criticism (Svetozar Marković, Svetislav Vulović, Ljubomir Nedić).
  • Origins of Serbian Realism: Jakov Ignajtović, Milovan Glišić. Rural (idealistic) Realism: Laza Lazarevcić, Janko Veselinov.
  • Vojislav Ilić. Consistent realists: Simo Matavulj, Stevan Sremac, Svetolik Ranković, Radoje Domanović.
  • Branislav Nušić and Serbian drama.
  • Literary criticism in the era of Modernism (Bogdan and Pavle Popović, Jovan Skerlić).
  • Parnass type and symbolic poetry: Aleksa Šantić and Jovan Dučić, Milan Rakić. Vladimir Petković Dis and Sima Pandurović.

Teaching methods
Subject involves the lecture and seminar, where results of home reading and preparing are discussed.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (maximum of 3 absences during a semester) and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion, presentation, handing in an essay. Final exam has a form of a written test.
