Course objectives (in Czech)
Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459) gehört zweifellos zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der italienischen Frührenaissance. Innerhalb seines reichhaltigen literarischen Oeuvres spielen (wie bei vielen Humanisten) die Briefe eine zentrale Rolle. Unsere Seminar wird sich dem Widmungsbrief der Sammlung Epistolae ad Nicolaum Nicolum (I 1 Harth) zuwenden sowie dem an Guarino da Verona adressierten Bericht über den Fund einer Quintilianhandschrift im Schweizer Kloster Sankt Gallen (II 4,5 Harth). Anhand eingehender Analysen und des Vergleiches mit Paralleltexten aus Antike und Renaissance soll exemplarisch der hohe Grad an Intertextualität und Selbststilisierung aufgezeigt werden, mit dem wir bei dem Epistolographen Poggio zu rechnen haben. Syllabus
  • In the course of the seminar led by prof. Hartmut Wulfram (Universität Wien), two letters of Poggio Braciolini will be read and analyzde: Epistolae I 1 Harth; II 4,5 Harth (scanned version available in the Study materials in IS MU). The seminar will be hel during the week of February 24-28; details will be specified.
Teaching methods
Seminars, class discussion, reading of selected Latin texts
Assessment methods
Credits will be given for active class participation, preparation of assigned readings, as well as translation of selected Latin sources.
