- Course objectives
- The course will provide the basic overview of material culture, architecture and burial rites on the background of historical and cultural development during Bronze Age in the area of Western and Central Turkey, as well as its adjacent islands (Samothrace, Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos, Rhodes). Emphasis will be put on the sites of Troy, Beycesultan, Miletus and Boğazköy-Hatušša. A brief introduction to the topic of Hittites will be included.

- 1. Geographical and historical overview of Anatolia. 2. The first high-cultures at the end of the 4thMilleniumand the royal tombs of Alaca Huyukin the 3rd Millenium BC. 3. Assyrian colonies in Central Anatolia (Early2ndMillenium BC) 4. The expansion of the Hittite empire, political geography, topography, cult and governance 5. Anatolian literature: types of texts, literary culture in Anatolia 6. Western Anatolia in the 3rd Millenium (Troia, Demircihüyük, Liman Tepe, Beycesultan + Eastern Aegean Islands) 7. Western Anatolia in the 2nd Millenium (Troia, Beycesultan and Milét) 8. Relations between Aegean, western Anatolia and the Hittites, Luwians, Assuwa countries, Wilusa, Seha, Arzawa and Ahhiyawa 9. The end of Bronze Age Anatolian Civilizations: migration of foreign elements from the Balkans, the problem of "sea peoples" and language issues
