Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain important moments and authors of Romanian literature. Course is based on home reading of selected works, their analysis at the courses and their contextualizing of Romanian, Balkan and European historical and cultural context.

  • 1.Literature of the 19th century. Political and social transformation of Romanian lands. Mihai Eminescu. Ion Luca Caragiale. 2. Realism and naturalism. Liviu Rebreanu. 3. Exile literature. Romanian emigration to France and other countries. 4. Tristan Tzara and dadaism. Theatre of the Absurd and Eugéne Ionesco. 5. Mircea Eliade, his life, scientific works, literary works. 6. Literature after the second world war. Socialist realism. Short story writers of the sixties. Dumitru Radu Popescu. 7. Romanian drama after second world war. Alexandru Mirodan. 8. Dictatorship of Ceauşesku and totalitarian Romania viewed by proses and essays written by Hertha Müller. 9. Contemporary Romanian poetry. Cassian Maria Spiridon. Andrei Bodiu. Alexandru Muşina.
