- Course objectives
- The aim of the lecture is to provide diachronically orientated Ph.D. students with information on etymology as a diachronic linguistic discipline, to introduce its methods, “rules” taken into account when reconstructing the development of phonology, morphology, word-formation etc.
- Syllabus
- 1) Characteristic features of the Indo-European community, of ancient and contemporary Indo-European languages 2) Root, stem, ablaut 3) Characteristics of the laws concerning sounds; types of sound changes 4) Word-formation: techniques using prefixes and suffixes; composition 5) Word-formation: techniques based on inversion 6) Characteristic features of semantic changes
