Course objectives
History of Brazilian Literature and Contemporary Brazilian Literature. Main objective is to offer basic orientation in the evolution, trends and movements in 20th Century Brazilian literature.
Syllabus
  • Main objective is to offer basic orientation in the evolution, trends and movements in 20th Century Brazilian literature. Seminars are oriented to analyses and interpretation of select texts. Program 1. Premodernism (Monteiro Lobato, Graça Aranha, Lima Barreto, Euclides da Cunha, Augusto dos Anjos, etc.) 2. Modernism First generation (precursors, Modern Art Week, journals, manifests, Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira, etc.) Second generation (poetry: Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Cecília Meireles, Murilo Mendes, Jorge de Lima, Vinícius de Moraes, etc.; prose: 1. regionalistic: Raquel Queirós, José Lins do Rego, Graciliano Ramos, Jorge Amado, Érico Veríssimo; 2. urban: Marques Rebelo, José Geraldo Vieira; 3. introspective: Lúcio Cardoso, Cornélio Pena; etc.) Third generation (Generation of 45) (Clarice Lispector, João Guimarães Rosa; poetry: João Cabral de Melo Neto, etc.) 3. Poetry in the second half of 20th Century (Mário Quintana, Ferreira Gullar, concretism, "practice poetry", tropicalism, marginal poetry, etc.) 4. Prose in the second half of 20th Century (introspective trend: Lygia Fagundes Telles, Osmans Lins; urban: João Antônio, Dalton Trevisan, Rubem Fonseca; fantastic: José J. Veiga, Murilo Rubião; humoristic: Luís Fernando Veríssimo; historical: Ana Miranda; etc.) 5. Theatre in the second half of 20th Century (Nelson Rodrigues, Guilherme Figueiredo, Ariano Suassuna, etc.)
