Course objectives
Main objectives of the course:
Modelling the process of research preparation;
Formulation of one's own research objectives;
Preparation of a brief review of literature relevant to the issue;
Writing a brief theoretical rationale;
Selection of adequate research methods;
Completion of a concise research proposal.
Syllabus
  • Selection of the topic.
  • Literature review.
  • Research designs.
  • Sampling designs.
  • Research proposal.
  • All students are required to complete three assignments during the course of the semester (see link below):
  • 1. First research topic proposal
  • Basic description and framing of the research topic
  • Rationale
  • List of (around 5) most important sources
  • 2. Conceptual model of the study, construct definition and construct operationalization
  • Definitions of the constructs explored in the context of the theory (citing all sources used)
  • Description and rationale of the conceptual model of the study derived from theory (how should the constructs be related and why)
  • Research questions
  • Operationalizations of the constructs: Which methods are generally used, and which the student finds most appropriate and why (critical discussion)
  • Hypotheses (if appropriate)
  • Complete list of references appropriately cited
  • 3. Complete first version of the research proposal - the proposal must include:
  • Appropriate title
  • Concise description and rationale of the research topic
  • Theoretical background and rationale - a concise summary of most relevant theories and research done in the area, including adequate definitions of the constructs and review of methods used for construct operationalization. All sources must be cited according to the appropriate citation standards.
  • Derivation of the conceptual model of the study from theory, including a well-reasoned description of the relationships between the constructs.
  • Research questions and a brief rationale of the basic methodological choice (e.g. experiment, longitudinal design, qualitative research, etc.)
  • Research hypotheses (if applicable)
  • Sampling and sample description
  • Description of research methods
  • Description of research design /procedure (depending on research type)
  • Brief proposal of data analysis
  • Complete list of references
  • The final version of the research proposal will be submitted both electronically and in a hard copy as a part of the PSA_0PP course.

Teaching methods
Students are required to register in one of the offered seminar groups according to the selected supervisor. Individual consultations with the supervisor are a matter of mutual agreement. All students have to follow the instructions of their supervisors regarding the time and content of the consultations, as well as specific tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Apart from attending individual consultations, students are required to submit three compulsory preliminary assignments as described above in the supplementary electronic course in the ELF. All submissions must be on time as specified by the instructions. Submissions are monitored centrally, but the content is checked and discussed by the supervisors individually. Each submission should also be discussed with the supervisor.
Assessment methods
Discussion with the supervisors, readings, individual supervisor assigments, and research proposal completion and submission.
It is COMPULSORY to complete and submit all three preliminary assignments electronically on the due dates, regardless of the supervisor's further requirements and instructions.
Language of instruction
Czech
