Cíle předmětu
This is a fully online course designed to improve students’ academic skills in writing, listening and speaking through individual and collaborative work. Along with revising and learning vocabulary and concepts from the areas of linguistics and academic English, students will work on tasks aimed at developing skills and knowledge essential for successful performance in academic environment:
• Initiating and participating in academic discussion
• Understanding longer oral and written texts on field-specific topics, e.g. textbooks, articles and lectures
• Efficient note-taking
• Understanding the principles of academic text organization, argument building, essay plan writing and essay composition
• Understanding the concept of plagiarism and how to avoid it through citation and paraphrasing
• Compiling a list of sources according to MLA and APA formats
• Performing basic corpus search tasks
Osnova
  • Each unit consists of vocabulary, reading or listening and extending skills exercises which include additional vocabulary and listening exercises, practice in contribution to discussions, note-taking, academic text organization, argument building, essay planning and writing, citation and paraphrasing, APA and MLA formats and corpus search. Starting from the 5th unit, speaking and writing tasks are also included.

Výukové metody
Výukové metody (anglicky): Weekly exercises in Elf; in the second half of the course also: 3 short writing assignments (producing a well-developed paragraph and two essay plans on given topics, approx. 200-250 words each) and peer-review of the texts, 2 speaking assignments (describing a picture and commenting on a topic for approx. 1 minute each) and a webinar towards the end of the course (more details on the course page in Elf)
Metody hodnocení
Exam: 50% written final test, 25% written task and 25% oral task based on the ones in the course.
Prerequisite for accessing the final test and tasks is 70% completion of all exercises in the course, including a mid-term test. Credit: 70% completion of all exercises in the course, including a mid-term test.
