Course objectives
This course consists of three parts: 1) Interpreting for Health Service, Doctors 2) Interpreting for businesses 3) Interpreting for Immigration Dept., Police Force, Court The teacher - an experienced freelance interpreter herself - will share her expertise with the students and supply them with useful hints based on her own real-life experience. Students will be expected to acquire the basic vocabulary in all three areas and practise interpreting, based on role plays. Each week a different situation will be simulated with emphasis on cultural differences, personal and communication skills, as well as appropriate language. Vocabulary tests and text summarizing are part of the course.

Short test Brainstorming, Business vocabulary building session Summary of a short text Contract negotiations between partners or investors/tour of factory for visitors Discussion of cultural differences (British/Czech) business environments Brainstorming, Technical vocabulary building session Summary of a short text Shop floor – machinery, inspection/ tour, technical drawings and negotiations Discussion of cultural differences (British/Czech) shop floor, political Training: Office - interpreting presentations, simultaneous Shop floor – learning to operate new machinery Short test Brainstorming, Law and Court vocabulary building session Interviewing people arriving at the airport Interviewing crime suspects at a police station, making statements Discussion of cultural differences (British/Czech) criminal systems Short test Interpreting for people in a court room, simultaneous
