Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basics of present day Hungarian. It has a practical approach; therefore it aims at providing students with knowledge that is readily available and usable in everyday situations. Although grammar forms an important part of the lessons, it is considered more a tool than an aim in itself. In other words, the goal is to teach students Hungarian, and not about Hungarian. By the end of the semester students will be able to: – ask and describe positions of objects or places; – understand and use numbers and prices; – inquire about nationalities and languages spoken, and answer such questions; – describe animate and inanimate things in more developed terms; – carry out conversations; - and read texts.
Syllabus
  • Students are going to be exposed to group-work and pair-work type exercises, simple readings and listenings, and are required to actively participate in the lessons. Participation scores form an important part of the course’s evaluation, therefore, inactivity can lead to failure. There will be homework assignments every week, as well as two tests during the semester (mid-term and final). To pass the course, students have to: – be active during the lessons; – do their homework; – sit for both of the tests and achieve an average of 65%; – and miss no more than two lessons. Language of Instruction: English and Czech, students are required to have a working level of English. Required Reading: Durst, Péter. 2004. Lépésenként magyarul. Magyar nyelv külföldieknek. Szeged: Szegedi Tudományegyetem, Hungarológia Központ.
