- Course objectives
- Main objective of this course is to get insight in the historical development of Dutch language. First the focus is on language varieties that are considered as „predecessors“ and „relatives“. Where does (Old) Dutch finds its origins? Subsequently the diachrone development of Old Dutch into Middle Dutch and finally contemporary Dutch is studied. A lot of attention is paid to the process of standardisation. An external approach is used, i.e. social and political factors are discussed.
