Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present clue issues which are connected to the phenomenon and provide basic theoretical framework for research on migration and religion. At the end of the course the student will be able to: - understand variability of historical cases when religion and migration interfered - understand complexity of migration and religion from various perspectives - understand and apply the theories concerning the issue
Syllabus
  • The course will be taught in blocks: 1) Reflections on the topic: Migration in the personal/family experience of participants Migration in your country perspective ( contemporary and historical) Migration in the European/global landscape 2) Psychological landscape of migratory experience ( identity, inclusion vs. exclusion) Migration in movies and cartoons (discussion based on students' reflections and on excerpts -presented in class- from the following materials: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Emigration by Jose Manuel Mateo, The Arrival by Shaun Tan) 3) Theoretical concepts in the discourse on migration and religion Acculturation theories, acculturation strategies, culture shock ( departure and return) 4) Different functions of religion in cultural transition of migrants a/Poles in UK b/Egyption, Turkish and Palestine females in Germany c/Vietnamese Diaspora in the US d/ South Americans on their way to safety 5) Overview of group projects Presentations (initial versions) prepared by respective teams.
Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussions, group project, reading.
Assessment methods
1. Attendance and participation ( 20%) 2. Homework and class presentation (30%) 3. Final group project (50%) Essays on the group projects (app. 15000 characters) should be submitted by May 15, 2016.
