Participation in this course presupposes personal motivation to take action in internet discussions and the social media in order to reduce xenophobia and simplifying claims concerning different cultural and religious traditions. The students have to be prepared to sustain arguments ad hominem, generalizations, insults, and threats, which might possibly include threats of violence or even death. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- Course objectives
- This course reacts to increase in expressions of intolerance of different cultural and religious traditions and of their factual study. Based on the values of a Faculty of Arts, students engage in activity which aims at moderating the manifestations of intolerance and lack of knowledge of other cultures. They can write a blog, contribute on Facebook or other social medium, discuss in online newspapers, etc. They suggest the specific activity in cooperation with their tutor.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:- choose an appropriate way of writing about “foreign” cultures and religions in particular online media;
- search up reliable materials for the discussion;
- take efficient action in a particular online environment;
- handle emotionally the manifestations of unethical argumentation, argumentation ad hominem, and different accusations, offenses, and threats expressed in online communication;
- negotiate even with people who are relatively firmly persuaded about their simplistic worldview and the rightfulness of their xenophobic opinions;
- collaborate on a shared project in a smaller group and learn from other participants of the project.

- Introduction to the course and its aims.
- The environment of online social media and discussions.
- The topic of refugees and islam in contemporary online social media and discussions.
- How to contribute. Personal safety and password security.
- Debate about proposals of projects engaging in online social media.
- Presentation of the project proposal.
- Start of the activity.
- Evaluation meeting I.
- Evaluation meeting II.
- Evaluation meeting III.
- Final report by the student and tutor with feedback.
- Teaching methods
- Seminar discussions, student presentations, communication between the student and the tutor, work online under tutorship, keeping notes about the activity.
- Assessment methods
- Evaluation of the action taken in an online medium, based on written report by the student and the tutor and its presentation at the colloquium (ca. 80 percent). Evaluation of the participation in the discussions held at the meetings and in the online course (ca. 20 percent). Required attendance at the seminar discussions.
