- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to give students an idea of the former stages of development of the French language and to make them understand how the earlier stages still influence the modern use and are present in it. At the end of the course, the student should understand thoroughly the phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical development in French and the continuity of the development of the language; to the same extent, the student should be able to understand and explain linguistic phenomena and norms from the diachronical point of view.
- Syllabus
- A survey of the development of French since the Vulgar Latin. Besides the phonetic development which has been, in comparison to the other Romance languages, very radical, structural changes in the language as well as the codification of the literary norm during the 16th and 17th centuries are constantly taken into consideration. special attention is paid to the role of French in the world and to the francophony. Seminars will focus on the explanation and interpretation of texts typical for the particular stages of development of the language. Special attention will be paid not only to the correct linguistic interpretation of the text, but also to a deeper understanding of the diachronical method of describing a language and its development.
