Course objectives
The Lectured in Medieval Script I course is part of a series of lectures which prepare students to read and interpret Latin script from the 9th to the 12th centuries (Carolingian minuscule). The seminar is closely connected to the Latin Script in the Middle Ages (800-1200) course and students should enrol in it together with this course. Seminar students at the Lecture in Medieval Script I will improve their ability to read Carolingian minuscule using extracts connected to do documents from the seminars of the Latin Script in the Middle Ages I course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
apply their knowledge of the development of script from the 9th to the 12th century based on specific sources, particularly for dating undated texts;
transcribe original Latin texts from the period 800-1200;
analyse and read original Latin texts from the period 800-1200.

  • • Bavarian scribal schools
  • • Diplomatic minuscule from the late 9th and 10th centuries; book script in the 10th century
  • • High Carolingian minuscule of the 11the century, Otloh's style, Bavarian scribal/painters' schools
  • • The oldest scribal schools in the Czech lands
  • • The origins of Czech diplomatic material
  • • Late Carolingian minuscule in the first half of the 12th century
  • • The origins of diplomatic minuscule in Bohemia and Moravia
  • • Carolingian minuscule of the mid-12th century
  • • Gothicization of Carolingian minuscule in the second half of the 12th century, Romano-Gothic, early Gothic minuscule at the turn of the 12th/13th century

Teaching methods
The seminar is based on the active participation of students and will be linked to the previous course, Latin Script in the Middle Ages I, and there will be further reading of source material.
Assessment methods
To obtain a credit, students will work on and submit a transcription of a Latin text of approximately 1 folio.
