Course objectives
The undergraduate will become familiar with the historical development of archives in Moravia and Silesia – the Moravian Archive, the Provincial Archive in Opava, the Brno City Archive and the Ostrava City Archive as well as the District Archives in Jihlava, Vyškov, Olomouc etc.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- characterize the main landmarks in the development of archival science in the Habsburg monarchy and in the Czechoslovak/Czech state;
- outline the main reasons for the establishment of archives in Moravia and Silesia;
- describe how the most important archives in Moravia and Silesia operate;
- name and chronologically order the main actors behind the establishment and development of archives in Moravia and Silesia;
- assess the benefits of work by archivists for a country’s cultural life;
- write an academic study on a selected archive or figure from archival science, with all the prerequisites of an academic text.

  • Main dates and points of the institution’s historical development from its establishment to the present;
  • Major figures who shaped the work and development of the archive;
  • How legislative development in archival science and administrative reforms are reflected in the work of specific archives;
  • Publishing activities and work with the public.
