Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand one of the important themes of the European Middle Ages – the term Antichrist, and also medieval concepts of the end of ages. The course will present not only basic development of the mentioned topic from its beginnings to the High Middle Ages but also details of the most relevant medieval theories and treatises about the Antichrist. This will be realized thanks to two media - medieval text (Latin texts will be administrated in Czech translation) and picture. With help of a teacher, the students will also experience reading some short medieval manuscripts about the Antichrist or end of ages (written in Czech languague).

  • I. Forms of medieval Christian eschatology, the issue of the term eschatology and the main eschatological terms; Julianus Toletanus (of Toledo), Petrus Lombardus
  • II. Development of the Antichrist idea in our country and Europe up to the High Middle Ages - text and picture
  • the Bible; patristics; Byzantine influence
  • Antichrist as the topic of works of various purposes and genres: e.g. commentary literature, letter written by Adso Menasteriensis, expectation of the end of ages according medieval chronicles and the situation around the year 1000
  • further trends – the study of heresy (Lollards, ioahimitism, valdesians...) prophecy, Ludus paschalis, De periculis novissimorum temporum (tract about a danger of the end of ages), Nicolaus Liranus (of Lyra), prophecy according Iohannes Rupescissa, critique of Antichrist by John Wyclif etc... and their influence and reflection in the development of the medieval Europe
  • reception of the European heresies in Bohemia
  • Czech prophets - "another Elias" and "the father of the Bohemian Reformation" Milíč of Kroměříž (correspondence and treatises)

Teaching methods
Teaching will have the form of lectures and seminars in the total amount of 1 and a half hour per week. Students will be working with the source texts translated into Czech.
Assessment methods
How to achieve the colloquium: oral interview during which the student will demonstrate his/her ability to orient himself/herself in the main concepts of the reformatory eschatology and the context of the medieval European eschatology.
