Course objectives
In this workshop master students of Dutch participate in the development and assessment of course materials for students of Dutch as a foreign language.
In the first half of the semester they are introduced to a project in which online lectures of the University of the Netherlands and Flanders will be used to create a new course. By means of questionnaires and other tasks, expectations and preferences of students are being examined. Several experiments will be carried out to test to what extent students understand different varieties of Dutch. Since the course consist of authentic listening materials, it is important to gain insight into the intelligibility of the selected speakers.
In the second half of the term students take part in the MOOC "Gent in gedichten" ("Ghent in poetry") which is designed for advanced students of Dutch. Students are asked to do the course and assess several aspects (such as difficulty of the tasks).
Learning outcomes
By doing the online course students acquire vocabulary and broaden their knowledge about Flemish culture, language and society. The experiments (+ feedback) enable them to get insight in their intelligibility skills. As they are informed about two projects concerning the development of new materials for learners of Dutch as a foreign language, they are invited to reflect upon didactic tools and learning goals and to formulate their opinion, both orally and in writing.
