- Course objectives
- The aim of this lecture will be to make students familiar with varied and in the same time very important period of the Byzantine history during which the Byzantine Empire was ruled by the Macedonian dynasty. The students will gain knowledge about individual rulers of this dynasty, and also about many problems they were obliged to face; about surrounding political entities and states, friendly, neutral or hostile to the Byzantines. This lecture inter alia will also help them to understand the background of the cyrolomethodian mission, and also of the christianization process of the other Slavic peoples - Bulgarians, Serbians and Russians.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student will be able to: • - improve his knowledge gained in previous lectures about Byzantine history; • - gain overview of historical sources concerning the period of the Macedonian dynasty; • - acquire detailed knowledge of the Macedonian emperors and of the important biographical data not only of the rulers, but also of their close relatives; • - perceive history of Byzantium under the Macedonian dynasty within the broader context of medieval Europe.

- 1. Introduction, geographic location of Byzantium, written sources of the period of the Macedonian dynasty. • 2. Friends and foes of Byzantium in 9th Century. • 3. Michael III and Basileios I. • 4. First generation - reign of Basielios I. • 5. Second generation - Leo VI. • 6. First intermezzo - Lekapenoi. • 7. Third and fourt generation - Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos and Romanos II. • 8. Second intermezzo - Nikephoros II Fokas and John I Tzimiskes. • 8. Fifth generation - Basileios II the Bulgar-slayer and Constantine VIII. • 10. Epigonoi of the Macedonian dynasty and its political heritage. • 11. Byzantine culture during the rule of the Macedonia dynasty. • 12. Spreading of the christianity abroad - Great Moravia, Bulgaria and the Rus' of Kiev.
