Course objectives
The principal aim of the course is to explain the transformation of the ancient society into the society of the Middle Ages, to state the causes of this process.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
- assess independently the importance of the causes that led to the transformation of the ancient society into the society of the Middle Ages;
- characterize the main vehicles of continuity between Antiquity and the Middle Ages;
- evaluate the contribution of inner problems of the Empire and the s. c. great migration of nations to the collapse of the Empire in the West;
- characterize the causes of the Byzantine survival.
Syllabus
  • 1. The views of previous and modern scholars on the Late Antiquity, the problem of continuity and break between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
  • 2. The crisis of the Roman Empire in the 3rd c. C.E. (agriculture, cities, civil society, religion).
  • 3. The development in the "barbarian" world in the 3rd c.
  • 4. The causes of the crisis in the eyes of contemporaries and according to modern historians.
  • 5. The differences between the Dominate and the Principate, the concept of Roman absolutism.
  • 6. The reforms of the emperors Diocletianus and Constantinus I.
  • 7. Social estates of the Late Antiquity.
  • 8. The changes as to the position of the coloni and slaves, general tendencies towards semi-liberty.
  • 9. Roman army and its barbarization.
  • 10. Great social movements of Late Antiquity and their causes.
  • 11. Agri deserti and the tax policy of the Empire.
  • 12. The Constantinian religious turn. The cooperation of the state and the church.
  • 13. Some important emperors of the Dominate after Diocletianus and Constantinus I.
  • 14. The zenith of the great migration of nations and its impact on the Roman Empire.
  • 15. The Visigoths and the Roman Empire. The first Christians of the Germanic world. The Wulfila Bible; the Visigoths in Gaul and Hispania.

Teaching methods
Lectures accompanied by theoretical training of students. A seminar devoted to reading of late ancient sources.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation takes the form of an oral examination. It is necessary to individually prepare at home, too.
