- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is:
- to make students familiar with the beginnings of ancient times in Europe, the relationships between Europe and the Near East during this era and the continuity and differences between Minoan, Mycenaean and Greek civilizations;
- to explain basic differences in the ancient history, the history of Greece in the Dark Ages and the Archaic period and its cultural contribution to the global cultural heritage;
- to illustrate in detail the origins and history of Greek poleis and their society. - Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to:
- evaluate the development of ancient Greece on the basis of recent sientific data;
- elucidate the transition from the tribal society to the state (polis);
- explain the importance of Greek culture for today's world. - Syllabus
- 1) The Mycenaean civilization, its state, society, culture. The realtionship to the ancient period of Greece.
- 2) The problem of coming of the Dorians and north-western Greek tribes to Greece. Continuity and disruption between the Mycenaean and ancient period of Greek history.
- 3) Sources to the Greek Dark Ages, the society of this period
- 4) Progressive features of the s. c. Dark Ages. The importance of the adaptation of the south-Phoenician writing system.
- 5) The process of creating the Greek poleis. The state and society in the 8th c.
- 6) Main changes in Greek life during the 7th c. (regarding economics, warfare, thought, ethics). The origins and rising of social tensions. The Greek oligarchy.
- 7) The Second Greek colonization and its civilization benefits
- 8) The earliest written laws of Greece. Early Greek tyrannis.
- 9) The specifics of the development of Athens, Sparta and Corint in the Archaic period.
- 10) Greecewide institutions. The Hellenes and the barbarians.
