- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to present the origins, development and contemporary perspectives of the new Italian detective ( and crime or thriller) novel with reference to the cultural, historical and literary context of the country. Several authors will be taken into consideration, focusing on selected passages to identify themes, style and linguistic features.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student is able to: - report on past and present events - identify and give reasons/explanations for the fictional protagonists´ point of view - formulate hypotheses and deductions - identify structure and conclusion in clearly written argumentative texts - use relevant vocabulary, including specific vocabulary from the selected readings
- Syllabus
- Introduction to the literary and historical background of the detective novel and further development of crime novels - or thrillers. Selected readings from Giorgio Scerbanenco's thrillers. Comics: Diabolik - written by the Giussani sisters. Considerations on the contemporary literary production and readings from Carlo Lucarelli, Gianrico Carofiglio and Mariolina Venezia. The language and style of the texts chosen will also be taken into consideration, with particular reference to the semantic field of fear, crime and justice. A wide selection of materials will be presented.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures and class debates will be implemented on the basis of the communicative language teaching practices, focusing on TBL - task based learning - for the consolidation of liguistic competence in the target language.
- Assessment methods
- Once enrolled in the course, attendance is mandatory (minimum 70%). Students will be asked to write at least five short essays on the writers - or topics- debated. Examination - evaluation of all the works required in classes.
