Course objectives
The course offers information on the historical evolution of entertainment and pastimes in Japan from ancient history till present day. Because the course is also open to students with no education on Japan and its history, short historical introductions to the eras in question will be provided at the beginning of each lecture. After the historical introduction, individual pastimes and forms of entertainment will be introduced. The course offers not only information useful to understand the Japanese entertainment culture but it also presents its students with a new perspective to view Japanese history. The lectures are supplemented with rich audiovisual materials.
