Prerequisite for attending the course is an interest in a deeper cognition of the personage of T. G. Masaryk and his philosophical works.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to enable students to get acquainted with the personage and thinking of T. G. Masaryk in more detail and also to become acquainted on the basis of their own readings with his philosophical works, in which he dealt with specific problems of his time. The course will bring an important period of time in history, not only Czech philosophy, closer to students.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student: will prove his/her knowledge of at least two of Masaryk's works, will explain the circumstances of their origin and will be able to analyse their content and interpret the problems dealt with in them.

  • Life and work of TGM from the point of view of his biographers (Karel Čapek, Emil Ludwig, Anna Gašparíková-Horáková, Stanislav Polák).
  • Reading and analysis of Masaryk's works.
  • Suicide.
  • Modern man and religion.
  • Humanist ideals.
  • Struggle for religion.

Teaching methods
Seminar follows an individual preparation of students (reading of the assigned literature). After a professional exposition, students are encouraged to make an independent interpretation of selected texts and take part in a discussion.
Assessment methods
The course requires regular preparation and at least 75% seminar attendance. At the end of the course, there is a written exam consisting of assigned literature. After passing the exam, students get 'zápočet'.
