- Students should be interested in the topic of autism spectrum disorders, mainly the theoretical background (classification, diagnostics, cognitive theories of autism...). They are ready to be active in class disscussions.

- Course objectives
- The course aims to provide detailed information about autism spectrum disorders (ASD) - its classification, sub-categories, diagnostic criteria and brief history. The main focus is on current cognitive theories of autism and understanding the behavior of people with autism. In the end a discussion about possible treatments and different situation of ASD care in European countries will take place.
- Learning outcomes
- In the end of the course students will be familiar with specific ways of treating, working or living with people with autism. They will get to know the diagnostic criteria and diagnostic tools and work with them, as well as they will get to know main modern theories of autism and some facts about the actual situation of care for people with ASD in Czech and Slovak republic. Students will be able to use the gained knowledge in real life situations.

- 1. Opening class, course outline, requirements 2. Basic information about autism, students’ experience with people with ASD 3. Non-traditional view on ASD – rigidity and rules 4. Non-traditional view on ASD – alterations in sensory perception 1st part 5. Non-traditional view on ASD – alterations in sensory perception 2nd part 6. Theories of ASD - weak central coherence theory 7. Theories of ASD – theory of mind, other theories 8. Methods used in treatment of ASD – motivation, visualisation, systemizing 9. Methods used in treatment of ASD – are all of the used methods useful? 10. Situation in Czech and Slovak republic, daily problems of people with ASD and their families 11. Homework presentations 12. Final discussion about the course, course completion
