- Course objectives
- This is a survey course of Italian literature through its major authors and literary movements from the Medieval to the 16th century Italian Literature. This course provides a chronological and comprehensive view of Italian literature and its major authors and trends, in their literary and historical context from the 14th Century to the 18th Century. Students will be guided to the reading of a selection of literary pieces and they will be supported in the contextualization of authors and works.
- Learning outcomes
- The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the history of Italian literature and to provide them with the critical tools needed to analyze major Italian literary works. Students are also guided to the study of the basics of prosody, philology and stylistic analysis.
- Syllabus
- Fourteen lessons of 100 minutes each. Main topics covered in the course: - The three Crown of the Fourteenth Century. - A selection of Francesco Petrarca’s "Rerum Volgarium Fragmenta" and of Boccaccio’s Decameron. The origins of Humanism. - Definition of Humanism and Renaissance, the study of the main features of the movements and on their representative authors. Excerpts from the works of Angelo Poliziano, Lorenzo il Magnifico, Niccolò Machiavelli and Ludovico Ariosto will be read. - The literature from the Age of Counter-Reformations. Readings from the works of Torquato Tasso, Galilei Galileo, Giambattista Basile and Torquato Accetto. - An introduction to the literature of the Eighteenth Century.

- Teaching methods
- The course will be conducted in Italian. Students will be guided in reading Italian literary texts. Students will receive weekly assignments and they are expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students are strongly suggested to attend the seminars on Leopardi and on Dante planned during Spring semester 2021. Students will receive a facultative reading list including the following literary works. Giovanni Boccaccio, "Decameron" (two novellas) Giambattista Basile, "Lo cunto de li cunti" (two novellas) This list is suggested to the students who intend to enhance their knowledge of some aspects of the Italian literature.

- Attendance and active participation in class discussion Final oral exam For the exam students are expected to prepare an oral presentation on a topic pre-agreed with the teacher.
