- Course objectives
- The main aim is to make Czech vocabulary instinctive at the given level of B2 in CEFR and develop and improve it in spoken and written expression. Interpretation of a text on the basis of listening and reading, and written expression in creating various texts with the application of stylistic techniques. Work with an authentic text (analysis from a lexical-stylistic point of view). Emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to compare the acquired vocabulary with the lexicon of their mother tongue.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the subject students will be able to:
- actively express themselves orally and in writing about given subjects using advanced lexical apparatus (C1 in CEFR);
- obtain greater readiness in expression;
- analyse specific features of contemporary language on a lexical level in accordance with the discussed themes. - Syllabus
- Exercises focus on synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and polysemy.
- 1. Synonyms- words with a similar meaning, intensity, generic terms, semantic and stylistic differences, foreign words.
- 2. Antonyms- word, sentence, negative opposites, semantic differences.
- 3. Homonyms and polysemy.
- 4. Functional styles.
- Further topics are for instance:
- 5. Substituting multi-word expressions with one-word expressions and vice-versa.
- 6. Verbs expressing sounds and movement.
- 7. Foreign geographical names and phrases expressing quantity. 8. Description of contemporary vocabulary (e.g internationalisation, terminologisation, types of neologism).
- 9. Conversation on so-called ‘unprepared current topics‘.
- During the course the student writes and submits 10 compositions on topics assigned by the teacher. Emphasis is placed upon the development and improvement of the student’s vocabulary (starting level B2 in CEFR).

- Teaching methods
- Explanation of the theory in the seminar will be supplemented by practical exercises. Work with texts the student has read or listened to and writing compositions on given topics (10/semester) will form part of the study. The use of problem-solving methods and managed debate. Group and individual work. Interpretation of a Czech text (oral and written).
- Assessment methods
- To pass the subject it is necessary to successfully meet the requirements of the closing written test, submit 10 compositions and write a final composition using the given stylistic structure. It is also necessary to abide by the following regulations: 1/ Attendance of lessons includes completing work set by the teacher (homework, in-class presentations etc.) Failure to complete this work (student’s lack of preparation) is counted as an absence. 2/ Students are not allowed to change groups, apart from in exceptional cases with the prior written permission of the teacher.
