Prerequisites
The course is intended for students of master degree studies. Basic knowledge on history of European baroque wall painting in 17th and 18th century and passive command of German is presupposed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course introduces selected chapters from the early modern iconography and iconology following examples of baroque library halls in the Central Europe and inspects the function of monastic libraries in monasteries and cloisters.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
Describe the specifics of the iconographical programs of baroque libraries;
Show a basic knowledge of iconology and emblematics and explain principles of early modern “concettismo”;
Specify the function of library halls in the early modern monasteries.
Syllabus
  • Baroque library hall: short outline of the history of libraries, iconography of the baroque libraries and decorum principle, function of libraries and library furniture.
  • “Concettismo”: art concepts, early modern iconology and emblematics.
  • Selected baroque library halls and their art decoration.
