Course objectives
The course is designed to further development of the skills in reading and writing basic Japanese. All students who intend to enroll to the course should be able to read and write hiragana, katakana and some basic kanji (approx. 20). Approximately 80 kanji will be introduced during the semester. The lessons will comprise of introductions of individual kanji characters and practice of reading and writing basic texts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to
read and write approx. 80 elementary kanji characters;
explain the usage of learned characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese texts;
apply the knowledge of the characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese words and sentences;
inspect the correctness of transcription of simple Japanese text written with respective characters;
formulate and write down elementary sentences;
assess the usage of learned characters in writing and transcribing simple texts.

  • 0. Introduction to the course;
  • 1. Basic principles of Japanese writing system, review of hiragana and katakana, brief review of introduction to kanji;
  • 2. review of kanji introduced in JPNN11;
  • 3. Kyoiku kanji 18-26;
  • 4. Kyoiku kanji 27-34;
  • 6. Kyoiku kanji 35-42;
  • 7. Kyoiku kanji 43-50;
  • 8. Kyoiku kanji 51-58;
  • 9. Kyoiku kanji 59-66;
  • 10. Kyoiku kanji 67-74;
  • 11. Kyoiku kanji 75-80, review;
  • 12. Final test.

Teaching methods
Lectures, exercises in reading and writing Japanese.
Assessment methods
Final written test (score 70 % or higher on the final exam). Students are expected and required to attend seminar classes of this course.
