Course objectives
Students spend 2-3 weeks in a selected secondary schools to develop professionally. Students will observe their mentor and their peers, prepare and teach EFL lessons on their own and with their peers, take part in reflective and feedback sessions, shadow their mentor in everyday school activities. Students compile a portfolio for future reference, which will be worked with at the final State exam.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to: 1. Prepare suitable plans for English language lessons in line with the focus of the course and school (e.g. General English, the culture and literature of English-speaking countries, inter-cultural communication, ESP) 2. Select, adapt and supplement material appropriate to the student needs and institutional settings and teach a class with an awareness of different student needs and learning preferences. 3. Teach and team-teach language lessons demonstrating effective execution of their planning and adjusting their teaching appropriately to actual circumstances of teaching English in upper-secondary classrooms. 4. Analyse and reflect on their own teaching, classroom planning and practice and give and receive constructive feedback. 5. Construct, administer, mark and evaluate a progress test 6. Manage everyday tasks of a secondary school teacher, for example, filling in a class register.
Syllabus
  • Students participate in external teaching at a selected secondary school. The number of hours to be spent at the school and their distribution according to individual activities are specified by course teachers. Students arrange their teaching practice in accordance with the information given here: https://www.phil.muni.cz/student/pedagogicke-praxe Students realize their practice during the teaching period of the semester. Students start their practice only after: 1. The administrative process of the practice arrangement is completed. 2. The semester introductory meeting at the department (this is realized in connection to the corresponding Reflective Seminar)

Teaching methods
Students teach under the supervision of mentors, complete observation tasks, take part in everyday secondary school activities
Assessment methods
To pass the course successfully students need to: - Participate in external practice at a selected secondary school in accordance with the instructions of course teachers. - Submit all the required documents (reflective diary, (self)evaluation document in pdf, portfolio, in some cases Agreement) by the deadline specified for the particular semester.
