Course objectives
The aim of the course is to check whether students are able to understand, translate into Czech and comment on selected medieval Latin exempla.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to understand, translate into Czech and comment on selected passages from medieval Latin exempla (see Course contents) and interpret their linguistic characteristics and historical context.

  • 1. Medieval exempla and preachers, introduction to the specifics of te genre
  • 2. Petrus Alphonsi, Disciplina clericalis (chap. 1-20)
  • 3.Gesta Romanorum (5 selected chapters)
  • 4. Caesarius of Heisterbach, Dialogus miraculorum (10 chapters)
  • 5. Working with dictionaries, commentaries and grammar books
  • 6. Linguistic analysis of the texts
  • 7. Interpreting the texts in a wider historical context

Teaching methods
The course is not regularly taught during the semester. Individual reading of selected passages, use of dictionaries and other tools, and, if necessary, consultation with the teacher.
Assessment methods
The knowledge of the texts is tested by translating selected passages from Latin into Czech and commenting on their linguistic features and historical and social context. The examination is oral, students have time for preparing the translation. Examination takes place in the examination period as well as during the semester (in the latter case, it is necessary to make appointment personally or by e-mail).
