Course objectives
The main goal of this course is to improve students' speaking and conversational skills. In addition, attention is paid to understanding and listening skills, vocabulary and grammar. This course is intended foor (upper) intermediate and advanced students (from B1+ till C1).
Learning outcomes
Students can speak and conduct conversations at level B2 (bachelor students third year) and level C1 (master students). See "can-do statements" CEFR.
They follow the Dutch and Belgian news and can summarize the content of articles, videos and audio.
They can formulate their opinions on different topics and are able to give convincing arguments.
They are able to perform various speech acts (such as giving advice, making an appointment, promising something, etc.).
Syllabus
  • The following components are covered during each lecture:
  • PART 1 (warm-up)
  • - In the news: students talk about an article, video or audio fragment of their choice about news from the Netherlands of Belgium.
  • - Word of the week: students present their “word of the week”.
  • - Focus on grammar/pronunciation/vocabulary: students' knowledge of a grammatical rule, pronunciation or vocabulary about a specific topic is activated and practiced by means of one or more speaking exercises.
  • PART 2 (topic)
  • - Introduction: the topic (or speech act) is introduced using authentic material (an article, video or audio fragment).
  • - Speaking exercises: students are given different types of tasks (discussions, role plays, mini-presentations,...) that relate to the central theme.

Teaching methods
Interactive, student-oriented seminars with different type of exercises, such as discussions, role plays and presentations.
In preparation of the classes, students read articles, watch videos, or listen to podcasts.
Assessment methods
Preparation of weekly tasks:
- In the news — students post an article, video or audio about news from the Netherlands/Belgium; they must be able to summarize its content.
- Word of the week — students post their word of the week and explain what it means.
- Another task — e.g. listening to an audio or video clip.
Presence (max. 1 absence) and active cooperation
- (Speaking) tasks are carried out and evaluated during each lesson.
- In case of more than one absence because of a valid reason, the student is given replacement tasks.
