Course objectives
The dissertation presents a result of a successful individual research of a selected philosophical topic, its introduction, and contextual framing, interpretation of related texts, and mainly a critical discursive analysis of the main topic and related themes, using standard philosophical methods and means; it must contain original ideas. See The Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations, article 31. The aim of the course is to finish the dissertation under focussed instructions of the supervisor. Registration typically after completing all Doctoral seminars and Seminars Preparing for Doctoral Exam.
Learning outcomes
After passing the course, students will be able: · to present outcomes of their own research · to rework their scientific texts on the basis of comments
Syllabus
  • During the semester, a student submits parts of the dissertation to the supervisor who comments on them. The comments are then implemented into the thesis. The dissertation must be delivered in 3 copies, 200000 symbols printed on white A4 paper, numbered pages, hardback. (Alternatively, the thesis is already a printed book or a set of published papers accompanied by a commentary and introduction; both of these possibilities must be approved by the programme committee in advance). Each copy must contain a title page with the name of the university, faculty, and department; the field of study; title; the name of the author and supervisor; year; originality statement; English (German, ...) résumé; content; list of bibliography references. For details, please see The Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations, article 32 and the actual faculty template. For defence of the dissertation, see The Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations MU, article 33. Two reviewers (one of them from another faculty/academic institution) are nominated by the dean on the basis of a proposal made by the chief of the programme committee. After the reports are finished, the date of defence is arranged by the chair of the programme committee. The committee for defence consists of at least five persons nominated by the dean; the supervisor and both reviewers are members of the committee. The chair of this committee is nominated by the rector. The defence is public. The committee decides in a secret (and not a public) vote. Graded evaluation is the result of the defence, which reflects the reviewers’ reports.
