Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to selected topics in School Psychology. Students will gain insight into the work of the school psychologist, understand their position in the school and counseling system. Furthermore, the first half of the course will discuss key topics of the school psychologist's work in relation to working with children and adolescents, as well as parents and teachers. The second half of the course will focus on working with collectives - i.e. measuring classroom climate, creating and maintaining a positive climate, investigating bullying, and working with a classroom where bullying is occurring.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to explain the system of counseling in education in our country; to understand the child care system and the networks of other professionals and specialists with whom it is possible to further cooperate and consult; to get oriented in the legislative framework regulating the work of the school psychologist; to be able to apply theoretical concepts in specific situations; to demonstrate their knowledge of preparation for work with clients in the framework of school counseling; to know the methods of school diagnostics; to design and implement appropriate intervention strategies to address specific problems of school practice; to be able to interpret the results of model diagnostic and intervention situations.
Syllabus
  • 1. School as an institution. Development in education, legislation, internal and external school network. Supporting system in education, its organization and legislation. Tasks and mutual cooperation of counseling centers.
  • 2. History of school psychology and current situation in the Czech Republic and abroad. Association of school psychology, professional journals.
  • 3. Professional roles of school and counseling psychologist, specifics of psychological work within the school. The work of the school psychologist.
  • 4. School counseling center. School psychologist, special pedagogue, school prevention method, class teacher - their role and mutual cooperation. Code of ethics for education workers.
  • 5. New trends in psychological diagnostics. Qualitative and quantitative methods in the work of school psychologist. Projective psychodiagnostic techniques. Screening methods. Dynamic testing, authentic diagnostics, activity-based diagnostics, portfolio, curriculum diagnostics, game-based diagnostics.
  • 6. School and family. Family image, relationship network, education styles. Collaboration of the school with the family. Conflicts between parents and their impacts. Principles of interviewing pupils, parents and educators. Individual consultation with the student.
  • 7. Work with classroom. Psychosocial climate of the class. The factors affecting the climate of the classroom. Determination of class climate, possibilities and limits of intervention. Climate of the school.
  • 8. Bullying in class. Types of bullying, bullying phases. Risk factors of bullying. Aggressor and victim of bullying. Diagnosis, prevention and solution of bullying at school.
  • 10. Interactive primary prevention programs.Prevention of sociopathological phenomena and behavioral disorders.
