Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the form of contemporary Czech drama. The lecture series will cover the period from the 1990s to the present. The main content will consist of reading dramas, getting to know the poetics of selected Czech authors and mapping theater companies and theaters focusing on staging contemporary Czech drama.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- analyze selected contemporary dramas;
- name the themes of contemporary dramatic work;
- orient oneself in the work of contemporary playwrights;
- describe the staging tradition of contemporary drama;
- interpret the relationship between the staging of contemporary drama and the dramatization of Czech prose works;

  • Analysis of selected plays
  • Discussion of current staging practice - what representation among productions do contemporary texts have?
  • The theater and its author - the author's creation of theaters
  • Dramatization of contemporary prose works (e.g. Leaning Church)
  • Publication practice of contemporary Czech drama - basic insight into sources, editions, theater agencies
  • Translations of contemporary Czech drama into foreign languages
  • Joint visit to a selected performance of a contemporary drama
