- What is the role of cinema in nurturing an ecological consciousness? How can non-narrative filmmaking challenge conventional perspectives on what we have come to understand as the ‘natural world’? Within the context of climate breakdown and ecological instability, and considering the centrality of visual media in all aspects of our lives, these questions seem vital in developing more ethical attitudes and ways of being. This course will offer an overview of ecocinema and its overlaps with eco theory and eco philosophy, examining the culturally constructed concepts of ‘nature’ and ‘environment’ and considering the complexity of ecological representation. It will explore the radical potential of experimental cinema to uproot traditional representations and to reveal new directions for thinking about the relationship between human and non-human worlds. Participants will be introduced to some key developments in experimental filmmaking as well as the emergence of ecocritical approaches to photochemical film practice. We will examine a a range of theoretical perspectives, assessing their application both to visual representation in general and alternative film practice in particular.
- Výstupy z učení
- Students who complete this course will:
- develop an ecological consciousness through cinema
- critique mainstream representations
- explore key theories and frameworks: gain familiarity with ecocriticism, ecophilosophy, and other concepts
- understand alternative filmmaking practices: examine the ecological implications of photochemical film practices and the significance of alternative media communities
engage with representations of non-human worlds
- connect queer theory and ecological philosophy
- consider future directions for ecocinema: reflect on the future of ecocinema in relation to technological advancements, ecological sustainability, and counter-cultural movements
By the end of the course, students will have gained a deeper appreciation for the radical potential of experimental cinema and its ability to rethink ecological relationships and representation. - Osnova
- Lecture 1: Film and Ecology: An Introduction This introductory lecture will look at film through different ecological lenses, considering the relationship between mainstream and alternative practice, as well as questions of technological sustainability.
- Lecture 2: Ecocriticism, Ecophilosophy and the Ecological Thought An overview of the key theories and debates influencing ecocritical approaches to film. We will look specifically at Timothy Morton’s concept of ‘the ecological thought’.
- Lecture 3: Alternative Communities and Photochemical Film Practice The flourishing scene of photochemical practice is central to contemporary experimental film aesthetics. In this session we’ll explore the relationship between ecology and alternative communities of obsolete media.
- Lecture 4: Representing More-than-human Worlds How can we move beyond the limited range of non-human representations that circulate in mainstream media? In this lecture, we’ll explore the field of critical animal studies in relation to film aesthetics.
- Lecture 5: Queer Ecology Building on the previous lectures and returning to the work of Timothy Morton and others, this session delves into the relationship between queer theory and eco philosophy.
- Lecture 6: Finding a Way Forward: For(a)ging Filmic Futures In this final lecture, we will consider the future of ecocinema within a changing technological landscape, shifting political priorities and counter-cultural communities of foraging and recycling.

- Attendance at all lectures is compulsory and will be checked regularly. Combined students may miss two sessions. Students are required to read all items on the compulsory reading list. All required materials are provided in the study materials. The course will take place the second week of May (May 5 - 9) 2025.
- Metody hodnocení
- In addition to compulsory attendance, students will have to take two tests. The first test is preliminary and will take place just before the start of the first lecture. The test will check the knowledge of the texts from the required reading list for the first three lessons.
The second test is the final one and verifies the students' familiarity with the reading list as well as their knowledge and skills acquired during the course itself. A maximum of ten points can be obtained in both tests; six points is the minimum required to pass the course. - Vyučovací jazyk

- Dr Kim Knowles is Senior Lecturer in Alternative and Experimental Film and Head of Department (Theatre, Film & Television Studies) at the Aberystwyth University in Wales. Kim has also been Experimental Film Programmer for the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is regularly invited to film festivals around the world.
Dr Knowles's current research explores the relationship between film and eco-philosophy, particularly within the context of non-human representation and animal worlds. Her recent book Experimental Film and Photochemical Practices assesses the contemporary status of analogue film (primarily 16mm) and argues for the continued relevance of material engagement for opening up alternative ways of seeing and sensing the world. Kim is now working on a monograph on multispecies cinema. - Studijní opora
