Course objectives
Teschen Silesia is an example of the territory where several nations met and their culture penetrated each other. Due to a long process of the national formation a special national group named Silesians (Šlonzáci, Ślązaki) existed there. The history of the region was very complicated in the 20th century and influenced the national structure within the region. Lectures will focus on that part of Teschen Silesia which since 1920 has belonged to Czechoslovakia and later to the Czech Republic (Těšínsko, the Teschen Region). Here, Czechs, Poles, Germans and Jews lived together. The lectures will focus on relations between Czechs and Poles because they both dominated in the region. Besides, the lectures will take into account a wider historical and international context which influenced national relations in theTeschen Region very much.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the lecture cycle will gain knowledge regarding the modern history of Teschen Silesia, mainly in the 20th century. Because of the specific situation in these territory the graduates should cope with problems of the national minorities in Czechoslovakia (with a special focus on the Polish minority) and the Czechoslovak state’s minority policy. This theme is very topical due to current needs (national minorities in the Czech Republic). Of course, the topic will be taught with regard to the wider context of Czechoslovak and European history.
