Course objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the causes, changes, significance and historical sources of papal nunciatures as permanent diplomatic representation of the Apostolic See at European courts in the early modern period in the context of the history of the Counter-Reformation and the history of diplomacy.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to understand the historical changes and importance of the permanent diplomatic representation of the Apostolic See, its principles and functioning in the early modern period in relation to the history of the early modern period.
Syllabus
  • 1. the papacy in the early modern period and its transformation;
  • 2. legations and nunciatures: two basic forms of papal action abroad;
  • 3. nunciatures in the context of the development of permanent diplomatic representation;
  • 4. the structure of the nunciatures and their transformation at the end of the 16th century;
  • 5. the position of the nuncio from the point of view of canon law, his activity in the church administration;
  • 6. the nuncio as a foreign relations actor and courtier;
  • 7. the nuncio and his "household";
  • 8. the nunciature at the imperial court and its significance for the history of the Czech lands during the Counter-Reformation;
  • 9. sources on nunciatures from the diplomatics point of view; their preservation in archives; editing and research.
