- Humans were famously defined by Aristotle as *rational animals* since humans endeavor to decide and act rationally. Yet we witness today a surge of non-rational reasoning, partly due to lack of proper eduction. Fortunately, RATIONAL REASONING can be educated. As Steven Pinker aptly puts it, "tools of logic, probability, and causal inference run through every kind of human knowledge. Rationality should be the fourth R, together with reading, writing, and arithmetic“ (Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters, 2021:314). The present practically oriented course aims to increase one's capability in INFORMAL LOGIC (as RR is often called in many English-speaking countries) and CRITICAL THINKING (as RR is often called in many other countries).

- Výukové metody
- (1) Standard contact seminar:
- each week there is 1 lesson (2 teaching hours)
- each lesson briefly explains a theory/technique and we exercise its application on practical examples
- exercising on practical examples is primary, your activity is indispensable
- after each lesson a short e-test as homework (see below)
(2) Interactive syllabi contains for each lesson:- text-rich presentation in PDF presenting problems + method of their solution
- links to exercises (homeworks) as e-tests (ROPOTS) in IS
- links to supporting external textual or video materials
(3) Homeworks:- each week an online exercise as a short e-test (i.e. ROPOT in IS) on the topics of the lesson
- each homework opens at the end of the lesson and closes after a week before the start of the next lesson
- voluntary: self-study of recommended materials
- Metody hodnocení
- (I) Conception: regular work through the semester, obtaining thus points, some minimum is needed to pass;
(II) Work/points:- (1) Accomplished regular short and easy HOMEWORK as e-test (ROPOTS) (one gets up to 5 points; each week, i.e. 11 times); obligatory
- - the quiz is based on the lecture and is not difficult; three submissions possible;
- (2) Attendance in class (one gets 1 point for answering QUIZ via QR code at the lesson beginning); non-obligatory
- (3) Active Participation in class - answering questions (one gets 1 point per answer); semi-obligatory, cf. below
(III) Minimum points for passing the colloquium:- (i) at least 40 pts from Homeworks; AND
- (ii) at least 4 pts from Activities (this number can be adjusted down by the teacher if needed;
- (iii) optional: each couple of pts from attendance may serve as surrogate 1 pt within (i) or (ii).
- (Note: the maximum for homeworks is 55 pts; for Attendance the maximum is 11 pts, for active participation roughly 11 pts; as regards obtaining points for participation, be pro-active)
- for those with no points from attendance, the contribution and attendance at the closing workshop is required.
- Náhradní absolvování
- Students on foreign stay, long-termed ill, ...: contact the teacher for details and agreement, self-study of materials from Interactive syllabi, and filling regular homeworks.
