Course objectives
Using both primary (literary texts, movies, photographs) and secondary sources the seminar tries to point at the spheres more or less marginalized in classical semiotic analysis and interpretation of media objects. That is why "picture/image" as well as "body" were chosen (on one hand as humanities concepts but on the other hand as phenomena that seem to pose a problem for humanities). That is way we will test at least the concepts of "affect" and "embodiment". In the seminar the possibilities of talking about memory using "images" will also be researched, moving us into the realms of "image anthropology". "Silence" is mainly connected with "death", presenting the end both of memory and corporeality.
Learning outcomes
In the seminar students
will test different non-semiotic approaches to "media" and discover the limits of their usability
will master interdisciplinary analysis and "interpretation"
will get to know methodologies of humanities that have not necessarily found their way into academic curriculum yet
